The Dalhousie University Medical School
was established in 1868 and has been providing education
and training to physicians and surgeons for over 140 years.
Dalhousie’s contribution to Medicine is significant
not only to meet health care needs in the Maritimes, but
also to Canada and the world at large. The purpose of
the Postgraduate Medical Education Office is to assist
in the educational planning and functioning of the postgraduate
programs for the Faculty of Medicine.
The Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office functions
to lend administrative and educational support to both
residents and 53 residency programs that are located at
5 teaching sites in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. We
ensure all programs meet the required standards of accreditation
by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
and the College of Family Physicians of Canada. These
bodies set out specific training guidelines that the PGME
office endeavors to ensure are adhered to by each program,
including educational content, evaluations, training environment
(such as workplace policy, intimidation and harassment
policies and appeals mechanisms). The PGME Office is responsible
to coordinate the postgraduate programs at the University
level by ensuring that each resident is registered not
only with Dalhousie University, but with required licensing
and liability assurance agencies that permit them to work
as training physicians. We ensure that residents complete
all aspects of training to permit their eligibility for
certification and licensing and document each trainee’s
academic progress to its successful completion.
Dr. Martin Gardner
Associate Dean
Postgraduate Medical Education
The Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education
develops and maintains the postgraduate programs
on behalf of the Postgraduate Medical Education
Committee. This committee meets monthly and is comprised
of representatives from each training program as
well as hospital and resident representatives. These
meetings review issues around training and help
to both follow compliance and promote understanding
around national standards and regulations. |

periodic reviews of the trainees and the training programs
and undertaking corrective measures where appropriate.
